THE MAIDS

Claire and Solange are sisters, Solange the older. For a number of years they have been personal maids to a wealthy woman. They work at their mistress’s beck and call day and night. Their only sanctuary is a small, shared attic room.

Servitude can be an entrapment and Claire and Solange respond through fantastical re-enactments of their mistress’s power and control. Reality and fantasy become distorted; rituals become compulsive and obsessive. The bleakness of their lives urges the only way out- to be rid of their mistress through murder.

Jean Genet may have written The Maids over 70 years ago but it retains a remarkable contemporary relevance to the exploitation of servants. Genet resisted the law, hated the bourgeoisie and his heroes were outcasts. He turned the norm on the head in this play, where the maids were not walk -on parts but leading ladies.
