JESS KOHL - FRIENDS OF THE DEAD

‘Friends of the Dead’ is a series of portraits of the individuals who work and volunteer in Londons most famous Victorian cemeteries - Abney, Tower Hamlets, Highgate, Kensal Green, Nunhead, Brompton and West Norwood -  known collectively as the Magnificent Seven.

These portraits serve to represent and give exposure to the community of people that keep these cemeteries alive, whose passion for these historic spaces is seen through the time they dedicate here. The artist used medium format, black and white film to best capture these portraits, developing and printing her prints by hand. The end product of this is a comprehensive book, available through her website, along with prints.

Jess Kohl is a stills and moving image artist, who recently graduated with a first class honors degree from Central Saint Martins, and is currently pursuing an MA in Cinematography at Goldsmiths. Her interest in subcultures and those on the fringes is seen in her work. Her current medium of choice is black and white 120 film, which she uses to capture her take on life, death and much in between.
